European Cybersecurity Talks
- Boosting the Cybersecurity Industry

Pictures of the event

Our modern society is by now unthinkable without digital support. Questions regarding the reliability and security of IT systems are becoming increasingly important – both for us as a society and Austria / Europe as a business location.

Concrete attempts to a solution will be presented and discussed during the ACM CCS 2016, the biggest scientific conference on information security which will take place in Vienna and is organized by SBA Research. Concurrently, SBA Research, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior and the Kuratorium Sicheres Österreich (Austrian Safety Board) are holding the event “European Cybersecurity Talks – Boosting the Cybersecurity Industry” (October 24, 2016 | 13.30 – 21.00 | Hofburg Vienna).

Part I “Bridging Politics, Industry and Science“ will give insight in the necessary political framework for the successful development of a European and Austrian Cybersecurity Industry. We expect keynotes from national and European representatives of politics and an expert panel to discuss how national and European policies and initiatives can contribute to insuring a safe digital society.

Part II – “Future Security Rockstars” presents current technological developments and promising security startups; Daniel Cronin, co-founder of AustrianStartups, will be moderating. The highlight will be the election of the "Security Rockstars” winners by an international jury and the audience.

Following this, we are inviting you to a relaxed get-together for networking and chatting.

Part I will be held in German, part II in English.

Cybersecurity and the European Union – ways to engage
Keynote by Martin Übelhör (Part I), Europäische Kommission - Generaldirektion Kommunikationsnetze, Inhalte und Technologien (DG CONNECT)

Abstract: The EU Cybersecurity Strategy and the NIS Directive form the core policy response so far of the European Union to these cybersecurity challenges. But there are also industrial aspects, and hence opportunities, to the cybersecurity challenge: Even though the whole value chain of digital technologies may not be mastered in Europe, we want to be amongst the best of the world as both users and suppliers of cybersecurity. The European Commission in July signed a Public-Private Partnership with the European Cyber Security Organisation, which represents actors across the whole cybersecurity value chain in Europe.
Martin's presentation will provide an overview of policy actions for cybersecurity at the European level, and then more concretely discuss opportunities for stakeholders to engage in the cybersecurity Public-Private Partnership.

Bio: Martin Übelhör works in the European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications, Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect). He is a policy adviser to a Director for Digital Society, Trust and Security. He deals with topics such as cybersecurity and digital privacy, smart mobility and smart energy, as well as eGovernment and eHealth. Prior to that, he worked in DG Connect's broadband unit and was involved in the negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council over the Connecting Europe Facility.

How Hackers Changed the Security Industry
Keynote by Chris Wysopal (Part II), Co-Founder & CTO, Veracode

Abstract: Before hackers got involved in cybersecurity the industry was focused on products and compliance.  Security was security features: firewalls, authentication, encryption.  Little thought was given to vulnerabilities that allowed the bypassing of those features.  Gene Stafford famously said SSL between two PCs is like using an armored car to deliver money from one park bench to another.  Hackers came along with the idea that you use offensive techniques to simulate how an attacker would discover vulnerabilities in a networks, a system, or an application.  Offensive skills have been on the rise ever since and now the best way to secure something it to try and break it yourself before the attacker does.

Bio: As Chief Technology Officer, Chris is responsible for the strategic direction of Veracode’s industry-leading technology, having co-founded the company in 2006. He is a well-known cyber security expert whose opinions are regularly sought after by media outlets. He has testified to USA Congress on the subject of Internet security and is a regular speaker at key industry events.
